Chimney Repair
& Rebuilds

Give an exposed part of your home the attention it needs. From worn mortar joints to deteriorated upper courses, we assess the masonry and explain the repair options clearly.

Design inspiration

Protection starts with understanding

Look beyond the surface.

A chimney faces rain, snow, wind and temperature changes with little shelter. Open mortar joints, damaged brick faces and a cracked crown can allow moisture to enter and contribute to further deterioration through freeze-thaw cycles.

Our masonry assessment considers the visible condition of the stack and the scope of repair needed. Local repointing may suit sound masonry with deteriorated joints, while damaged or unstable sections may require partial or more extensive rebuilding.

Exterior masonry work does not certify a fireplace, flue or heating appliance for use. Where venting, liner condition or appliance safety is in question, a qualified specialist should assess the system separately.

Target the source of deterioration

The right repair for the condition.

Brickwork & repointing

Renew appropriate areas of the chimney without rebuilding sound sections unnecessarily.

  • Assessment of eroded or missing mortar
  • Replacement of damaged masonry units
  • Compatible mortar and joint finishing
  • Material matching where suitable products are available

Partial & full rebuilds

Reconstruct deteriorated sections when repairs to individual joints are not enough.

  • Review of the extent of damaged masonry
  • Controlled removal to suitable existing work
  • Rebuilding of the agreed stack sections
  • Coordination of support and specialist requirements

Crowns & moisture details

Consider how water reaches the masonry, not just where damage appears.

  • Crown repair or replacement where appropriate
  • Cap and termination requirements reviewed by scope
  • Water-shedding details and suitable finishes
  • Roof flashing and flue-related work coordinated as needed

The estimate distinguishes masonry work from roofing, liner, appliance and inspection services. Specialist work and any required approvals are confirmed before construction.

Know what to look for

Address changes before they spread.

Reasons to arrange an assessment

  • Loose material or damaged brick facesFallen mortar, flaking surfaces and loose units can indicate deterioration. Keep clear of areas below visibly unstable masonry.
  • Open joints or crown cracksThese may provide moisture pathways and deserve assessment before simply applying a surface coating.
  • Leaning, separation or persistent dampnessMovement and leaks can have different causes. A masonry repair may need to be coordinated with structural, roofing or venting advice.

What affects the repair cost?

Chimney height, roof pitch, safe access, staging, the amount of damaged masonry and material availability all influence the estimate. The scope may also depend on what is found beneath deteriorated upper sections.

Photographs taken safely from the ground are a useful starting point. Please do not climb onto a roof to obtain pictures. We discuss access and inspection needs when reviewing your request.

Assessment to completion

A measured approach to repair.

01 / REVIEW & DEFINE

Establish the condition.

We discuss symptoms, assess access and identify the likely repair extent, including any separate flue, roofing or structural assessment needed.

02 / PROTECT & REPAIR

Complete the agreed masonry.

Site protection and access arrangements are followed by the specified repointing, brick replacement, crown work or rebuilding.

03 / FINISH & EXPLAIN

Clarify the next steps.

We review the completed masonry and explain curing considerations and any outstanding specialist checks before appliance use.

Before you begin

Chimney questions,
answered.

Does my entire chimney need rebuilding?

Not necessarily. The appropriate repair depends on how much masonry is deteriorated and whether the remaining structure is suitable. We distinguish local repairs from rebuilding during assessment.

What is the difference between a crown and a cap?

The crown is the top surface that helps shed water away from the masonry. A cap typically covers a flue opening while allowing venting. Their design and suitability depend on the chimney and appliance system.

Will repointing solve a chimney leak?

Only if deteriorated joints are the relevant source. Leaks may also involve the crown, flashing, roofing, liner or condensation. The source should be identified before selecting a repair.

Can I use my fireplace while waiting for repairs?

If there is suspected flue damage, loose masonry, a smoke problem or another safety concern, do not use it until a qualified professional has assessed it. A masonry quote alone is not confirmation that the appliance is safe to operate.

Do I need a separate fireplace inspection?

Depending on the appliance and purpose, a separate inspection may be appropriate. Wood-burning systems may require assessment by a WETT-certified professional; gas appliance and venting concerns should be reviewed by a qualified gas technician.
